ABAU Galicia: everything you need to know

ABAU is the Spanish acronym for the Spanish University Exam Entrance. This is the qualifier taken by the Community of Galicia for university entrance exams.

Today from UIE we show you dates, subjects, tests and, in short, everything you need to know about the ABAU Galicia 2023. Let´s start!

How is ABAU Galicia organized?

The instructions that determine the organizational aspects for the realization of the ABAU are found in the Resolution of February 11, 2022, of the General Secretariat of Universities in conjunction with the General Secretariat of Education and Vocational Training (published in the Official Gazette of Galicia of February 22, 2022).

The evaluation will only be carried out for students who want to access the University Degree studies. The body in charge of the organization is the Interuniversity Commission of Galicia (CIUG, by its Spanisg¡h acronym). On its website you can find the documents related to the registration call.

The ABAU Galicia test is structured in two parts:

  • Mandatory part.
  • Voluntary part.

What are the subjects covered by the ABAU Galicia 2023?

In the compulsory part of the ABAU will proceed to the tests on the general subjects of the block of core subjects (according to the chosen specialty) and on the subject of Galician Language and Literature II. All are corresponding to the second year of baccalaureate.

General subjects of the block of core subjects:

  • History of Spain II.
  • Spanish Language and Literature II.
  • First Foreign Language II.
  • Galician Language and Literature II.

General subjects of the block of core subjects according to the specialty:

  • Fundamentals of Art II (specialty in Arts).
  • Mathematics II (specialty in Science).
  • Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences II (specialty in Humanities and Social Sciences).
  • Latin II (specialty in Humanities).

With respect to the voluntary part, it is only done for the purpose of improving the admission grade.

The student who is interested in it will be able to examine a maximum of 4 subjects, which will choose between the subjects of option of the block of core of any specialty and the specific core general subjects of specialty other than the one examined in the compulsory part.

The core subjects of option are the following:

  • Performing Arts.
  • Biology.
  • Audiovisual Culture II.
  • Technical Drawing II.
  • Design.
  • Business Economics.
  • Physics II.
  • Greek II.
  • History of Art.
  • History of Philosophy.
  • Chemistry.
  • Geology.
  • Geography.
  • Second Foreign Language II.

General core subjects of modality (except that of the modality studied):

  • Fundamentals of Art II.
  • Latin II.
  • Mathematics II.
  • Mathematics Applied to Social Sciences II.

In the same way, students will be able to take one of the linguistic options of the Second Foreign Language II other than the one they studied as a general subject of the block of core subjects (German, French, English, Italian or Portuguese).

How are ABAU Galicia exams scored?

In the compulsory part, each of the exercises of the general subjects of the block of core subjects of the chosen specialty and the subject of Galician Language and Literature II, will be graded from 0 to 10 points, with two decimal places. This qualification must be equal to or greater than 4 points.

On the other hand, each of the subjects that are elective (in order to improve the admission grade) will also be graded in the same way. The subject will be considered passed when a grade higher than 5 is obtained.

However, for the improvement of the admission grade, the grade obtained in the compulsory phase in the specific general subject according to the specialty will be taken into consideration, as long as the grade obtained in the subject is greater than 5.

How are the ABAU Galicia tests?

The characteristics and design of the tests comply with the provisions of Order PCM/63/2023, of January 25.

Each of the tests has a series of open and semi-open questions. In addition, multiple choice questions can also be used.

The difference between them is that multiple choice questions only have an unequivocal answer and the student has to choose between the options (test type). Meanwhile, semi-open questions have an unambiguous answer that the student has to construct (a number, a phrase, etc.). Finally, open questions are those that require a construction by the student. The idea is that the student demonstrates his capacity for critical thinking, reflection and maturity.

What are the dates of the ABAU Galicia?

As established in the instructions, the ABAU Galicia has a duration of 3 days. The Interuniversity Commission of Galicia approved the dates for the exams for access to the university course 2023/2024 on June 6, 7 and 8.

Otherwise, the retake will take place in July. The extraordinary call will be held on July11, 12 and 13.
