The undergraduate students who will study in this first year of implementation participate today in a meeting at our institutional headquarters in Santiago de Compostela. A participatory event with interactive dynamics, following the UIE model, with the presence of the dean, Miguel Ángel Escotet; the general coordinator of academic development, Professor Bettina Chechia; the general coordinator of corporate development, Ana Vázquez; and the deans and professors of the Faculty of Business Administration and Law, Álvaro Gómez and Engineering and Business Technology, Eladio Dapena and, representing the Governing Council, the General Secretary and Vice Secretary Pedro Otero and José Luis Vilanova, respectively.
The dean, Miguel Ángel Escotet, who personally greeted each of the students, stressed at the beginning of this first year of implementation, the mission of UIE as “a university for innovation, which allows a vigorous capacity for creation, research and change; a university for human beings, centered on people, that educates for talent and disposition, strengthening critical thinking, creativity, transformation, adaptation to permanent change and anticipation of the future, vital in this historical moment of change paradigm. Our first commitment is to the student and the integral development of her as a person and as a professional.
In this first year of creation, we started with four degrees, which will be taught simultaneously on the A Coruña and Vigo campuses:Intelligent Systems Engineering, Digital Business Administration, Business Administration and Management, and Business Engineering, which is incorporated as a novelty in the Spanish university system. Two university master’s degrees are also taught: Business Data Technology and Intelligence and Business Management and Administration, which are scheduled to begin on September 26. To these we must add the different postgraduate and Executive Education, continuing education and InCompany titles. In accordance with the legal prescription, it will progressively incorporate in successive courses, a new faculty and undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degrees, as stated in its global implementation project, with an innovative academic and teaching-learning model that combines the systems of European (Bologna) and Anglo-Saxon higher education.
We began our educational path as a cutting-edge, private and public service university, non-profit and committed to the sustainable development of Galician society, culture and economy. In addition, from an orientation towards innovation and technological development, we will have an International Business Council, and a National Business Advisory Committee. With the value of the experience of more than three decades of executive education and, as one of the first international universities specialized in business, we will develop a close collaboration with the business sector as part of the educational process. Likewise, a unique practicum in the Spanish university system will be implemented, which will incorporate a wide range of extracurricular and service-learning activities, with community service projects so that students experience the value of their personal contribution to a more sustainable society model..
As a strategic corporate and institutional social responsibility project of ABANCA and Afundación, financed exclusively with their own resources, UIE’s yields will be completely reinvested in the institution. Likewise, we will allocate up to 15% of our annual income to scholarships, giving priority to talented people who have a low level of income.
A UNIVERSITY COMMITTED TO SOCIETY
UIE presents a learning-teaching model focused on the student, flexible and personalized, with a reduced ratio of students per classroom that allows for the development of permanent tutoring and mentoring. Its teaching staff includes active academics and professionals who develop the content based on their own experience, guaranteeing its applicability to the reality of organizations. The faculty is reinforced with a program of prestigious national and international visiting professors, focused on research, teaching and social responsibility.
Internacionalization is one of our founding principles. We will provide the student with an international, bilingual and multicultural experience, inside and outside the institution. Student mobility is provided for in the study plans of all degrees, expanding and strengthening agreements with prestigious universities, in line with those already existing.
The model will be flexible and personalized, with mobility between degrees, the possibility of freely taking some subjects in other degrees at UIE or other recognized institutions, national or international, or the implementation of an optional intensive extraordinary summer semester for students to advance or recover subjects and develop education-work internships. Likewise, at the end of the first academic year, students may change degrees without prejudice to the credits taken, which will be recognized in the destination degree. On the other hand, the credit system makes the European Bologna system compatible with the American, Asian and Anglo-Saxon system.
